La Bajada de la Virgen 2025: A unique tradition in La Palma not to be missed

By | 10 January, 2025 | 0 comments

The year 2025 will be particularly exciting for La Palma: the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves is back, a unique celebration that takes place only every five years and turns the island into the epicenter of tradition, devotion and culture.

This year is even more special, because the population of La Palma had to wait 10 years after the last celebration due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A tradition with centuries of history

The Bajada de la Virgen is the most important event in La Palma. Since the 17th century, the island celebrates the descent of its patron saint, the Virgen de las Nieves, from her sanctuary on the peaks to the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma. It is an act full of magic and symbolism that brings together thousands of visitors and locals in processions, traditional dances, cultural events and festivities that last for weeks.

The schedule of the Bajada de la Virgen 2025, is divided into the “Semana chica”, which starts on June 29, and the “Semana grande”, which takes over from July 6 to 14.

Moments you cannot miss

  • La danza de Los Enanos: The most emblematic moment of the celebration, where folklore, music and the magic of the dwarves create a unique spectacle.

  1. La Romeria: The procession that brings the patron saint down from her sanctuary to the centre of Santa Cruz de La Palma is an emotional experience, with dance groups, traditional music and a crowd dressed in traditional clothes.
  2. La isla en fiesta: From concerts to theatre performances, the streets and squares of La Palma are full of life, art and culture.

Living La Palma in its most special year

The Bajada de la Virgen is much more than an event: it is the living essence of La Palma. If you have already made your reservation at Hacienda San Jorge or Apartamentos La Caleta for this date, it is the ideal starting point to enjoy the tradition and natural charms that this beautiful island has to offer.
